The pieces of Roman glass discovered throughout the Holy Land. The Holy Land – Israel – is the spiritual center of the monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Archaeological digs from the past and of today are still excavating proof of the land’s historical relevance to these religions.
The occupation of the Holy Land by the Roman Empire in about 55 BC has left remains from that time and civilization. Glass perfume and oil phials, glass jugs and bottles (or broken pieces of these objects) are being excavated in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Caesaria, Nazareth, Hebron, Masada and other sites of ancient Roman occupation. (Objects that are excavated intact, are transferred to The Israel Museum, and are very highly valued.) Roman glass of the first century AD included vessels of varying quality.
The Romans used glass quite a lot and the technique for glass making was very advanced. Women used glass bowls, pitchers and glass bottles to keep aromatic oils and perfumes in.
